Books, Writing, Reading and Creativity

VIDEO 4

This video is number 4 in the series of 6. They all join to make a discussion of pleasurable book and word experiences which can be offered to children, and which can help develop a love of books, reading, writing and creativity.

They are only about 8 minutes each and on separate pages to reduce download times. Though each video can, hopefully, be enjoyed just by itself by people of all ages - whether they are 'educators' or just book lovers - it's recommended that you view all six in order. Initially, at least.

This video starts with a look at some nice old childrens' books - and a 'nasty' one that older kids like. Most children benefit from word experiences other than from story books - poems, plays, musicals and more, and these are discussed. At the end, I introduce the concept of 'artists' books' - book structures to stimulate the imagination.

The Other Videos...

Number 1 You'll see a glimpse of my studio and a lot of books around my house, and I show books my two children and I constructed when they were both very young.

Number 2 There are many kinds of books that young children can make. Some prefer to create non-fiction books rather than produce story books. In this video I discuss some reasons why we want children to read and introduce the idea that many books can be enjoyed without being read - just because it's good to experience them.

Number 3 In this one I'll show you some items from my collection of 'ancient wonders' - books and other pieces of writing from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Number 5 Here I'll show you a lot more different book structures, including easy ones that children can develop for fun, school assignments, or to win competions. You can watch me fold one! I also discuss and show samples of using words as elements of design - creating 'word pictures'.

Number 6 As you can imagine, at the end, this video has a summary of all six that make up the series. Most of this sixth one, however, shows how to enjoy words and writing through calligraphy and 'word art' - and you can watch me write. Hopefully the instructions will enable people of any age to enjoy 'playing with pens' and 'painting with words'.
